Je suis joie What a Face

Question: Avec ou sans toms ?

Bien.

Question de sensibilité quoi.

+1

Very Happy

Well, here we go. Summer's done and off we go once again into the land of cold, dark, ice and frost. So it's not all bad then! Ark ark...

We're currently getting started on finishing the mixes to The Philadelphia Experiment which we hope to have ready for sale by Christmas. The CD will feature as much of the gig as we can fit into 80 minutes. The accompanying DVD will feature the full 105 minute show in WAV format so you can load it onto your i-device and enjoy the whole thing as it happened. There will also be a 42 minute documentary on the DVD that charted the course of our prep for the gig and some other wee treats. So lots of fun to be had if you pick up a copy, which if you did, it would be very lovely of you.

As of this time, we've also parted company with InsideOut. Our deal was for 2 albums and after a lot of very amicable chats we both decided that our paths lay in different directions going forwards. So as of this moment, Frost is an independent entity although we are looking into some distributions options for the live album. More news on that in due course.

Elsewhere, myself, John Mitchell, Andy Edwards and/or Nathan King are playing a small number of shows in November under the moniker of "An Esoteric Evening With Two J's And An A". We'll be trawling our back catalogues and playing a bunch of stuff that needs to be heard frankly. We're looking to head over to Cardiff and up to Birmingham to play, but the first show we can announce is at The Peel on Nov 7th 2009. Check out http://peelmuzik.webeden.co.uk for more details.

Then in 2010, I'm planning on doing a few solo gigs most likely in the form of support slots for other bands. I've got a lot of mad stuff planned for that and may well have some new faces for you to meet as well...

But what about Frost 3 I hear you saying. Well, not being signed anymore means a lot more than maybe it first appears to the casual thoughtster. The world really is our oyster now and the sky is literally the limit. First off though, I have to move house. I'm leaving East Sussex and heading to Bath, a place I've always loved. Once there, I need to set up a new studio which could take some time and indeed, the whole moving process could take anything up to a year to happen, maybe more. So there's much to be done twixt now and then.

After that though...

The Cube déménage !

Arrow http://www.thedividingline.com/eventarchives/tenrev/DLBN_Ten_Revolutions-A_Chat_with_Jem_Godfrey_of_Frost.mp3

What a Face)

Citation :
[...] Which brings me onto another piece of exciting news, I’m going to start work on a new Frost*….I hesitate to use the word “album” really as I’m not sure about how best to deliver the next tranche of music.

Actually I completely am.

Traditionalists will go “Ooh goody ! An album !”, but whoa! there Cowboy. That basically means you’re looking at about a year before you can hear anything. In Tinyfish, my brother’s band’s case, it’s been nearly 3 years ! Something that I know for sure has pretty much done his head in, as well as being frustrating for me and many other fans of the band.

So my current plan is to start writing, recording and releasing either single longer pieces or small clusters of shorter songs, made available roughly every 3 months or so, with a caveat to the variety of inevitably random external factors that will no doubt crop up along the way. The Dividing Line was the first of these.
Thomas Dolby has spoken already of doing something similar with his new album, as has Imogen Heap. I’m sure others will follow.

Perhaps it’s something to do with the “now now now !” attitude that the Internet has bred in me, that makes me think that big gap/album/big gap is not the way of the future anymore
. Buying things on Amazon and via iTunes, and indeed any company that has an immediate online delivery service, has made me basically impatient. And selective. And why not ? It’s the same with a lot of my dayjob work, more and more of my customers want their audio sent to them via YouSendIt the moment it’s done and definitely not on a CD that’ll arrive in a couple of days. I don’t have a problem with this. Far from it, I completely agree. It’s just the next natural step in how commerce works, thanks to advances in broadband speeds coupled with the shambolic state of things, like the transport and postal systems. Certainly in the UK anyway. Too many times now, I’ve paid an extra £3 to have something delivered by 12pm the next day, only to have it trickle in at about 4.40pm, delivered without so much as a breath of apology. Or a refund.

And as you know, I’m definitely a fan of the Charles Darwin way of things when it comes to life.

Also, making The Dividing Line was very enlightening in many ways. I had SUCH fun making it. Sure, there was a little bit of time pressure, but I can tell you, having made two albums previously, there can be very very dark times in the middle of an “LP”, if I may be so analogue for a moment – a sense that you’ll never, ever emerge from the all-consuming and seemingly neverending task of tweaks and faffing about, that generally makes the experience of a full-length album bit of a pain in the arse.
Sure, TDL was challenging and a bit stressful at times, but knowing that once it was done it was done, and that would be it for a while, kept my spirits right up and made me savour the experience far more. I absolutely loved making TDL and I think it sounds like it too.

If you come out of a bad relationship and suddenly find yourself free, single and (in my case at the time) a small, but lovely, light and airy loft apartment in Strawberry Hill in the Spring, the very last thing you’d ever want to do is go back to your previous life, and resume the suffering just off the Archway Road in North London (in my case at the time). So it is, I think, with me and making full length Frost* albums in a single sitting.
And I’d bet me arse that Simon Godfrey, John Mitchell and a variety of my other good mates that make this kind of music would nod so enthusiastically in agreement that their eyes would collide atop their noses.

A counter argument, certainly in the case of prog, is that albums are complete pieces of music designed to be heard as a whole. That’s a fair point, but if you look at it from a different angle, more like a film and a set of sequels such as The Matrix or Kill Bill or Star Wars or Lord Of The Rings and so on, the idea that each track can be viewed as a whole and then put together to form a larger, yet still coherent body of work at a later point makes sense to both viewpoints actually. This actually makes the initial idea even stronger in my opinion.
Me and Mitchell are getting together at the end of the month to have a knock about with Frost* in mind, to see if anything happens with a view to starting the next track. Plus we’ve got the ELP track to do next month obviously…

In terms of delivery, I’m still thinking about that one. I certainly want to make a lossless version of the new material available for download for the audiophiles out there as well as via SoundCloud or similar. I’m also thinking about a nominal charge/pay-what-you-want scheme, or perhaps just charging for the lossless versions. There will be CD “single” versions available, at a small cost of course, plus new merch and other items that people can get direct from us. Eventually, when there are enough tracks to make a full-length album, we’ll release that in the trad manner, but I can’t see them selling that many to be honest, because I think the other methods of delivery will be much more successful.

I also need to find a publicist or some such to help with promotion. That should be fun.

In terms of Frost*’s lineup, I think that is going to be another interesting part of the new idea. I really REALLY enjoyed working with such a diverse team of musicians for TDL, and much in the same way that Peter Gabriel has always mixed and matched his collaborators, I plan to do the same. There is a genius out there in the UK folk scene currently who I’d love to work with for the next track, as well as a couple of other gentlefolk who I’m already chatting with regarding later tracks that I’m already planning.

The YouTube content will continue obviously, as it’s been such a fantastic way to communicate with the outside world. We were definitely amongst the first in the prog world to do that, and it’s nice to see a lot of other prog bands all over the place starting to do the same now, because it really does work.

I’m sure there will be people who’ll be a bit worried by all this change, but being free of the record company model gives us a chance to try some stuff out, be bold, experimental and be much closer and more involved with the people who listen to us. There might only be 1 Frost* fan out there eventually, but that would still be fine. I’m a realist. It’s not about global domination or being the best or biggest prog rock act there is. It’s about connecting with people, and sharing something that I hope we’ll all get something out of. Sometimes we’ll fuck it up, sometimes we’ll get it spot cock on, either way it’ll be a fascinating journey. An experiment. A bit of escapism for all of us. And it’ll definitely be a laugh.

So, I know I said 2010 would be a Frost*-free year. Basically… I lied.
